Everyone has heard that sailboats have the right of way.  In fact, oftentimes they do.  But there are many vessels that take priority over sailboats such as those constrained by draft in a narrow channel, a vessel restricted in its ability to maneuver, etc.  We coach the rules of the road and as best we can, common sense and judgement. By the way, sailboats with their engine running fall under rules for powerboats, even of their sails are up.
